The Canowindra Historical Society is now known as Canowindra Historical Society and Museum Inc.
That was one of the amendments to our Constitution adopted at the special meeting in November.
Others will come into effect from the annual general meeting on Wednesday March 22 at 2pm in the RSL Room in the Services Club.
All are welcome and we encourage new members.
Do invite someone who might join. John Farley has indicated that he is not seeking re-election as President.
Highlights of 2005 were: Evening of Memories with fashions of yesteryear; receipt of the award at Cootamundra of a Certificate to prove completion of the Standards Program along with other museums in Lachlan Chapter; work on the Pioneer Register and the Tourist Drive; Object Files of significant items in our collection (Audrey Farley wants to collect those outstanding by the end of March); Participation in the Watermarks Exhibition in Orange Regional Gallery; our own Watermarks display and talk by Graham Clegg; the RAHS Conference at Bathurst; revision of our constitution; 40th anniversary celebrations of Millthorpe Society; erection of Canowindra Railway Story sign during Springfest for which we will be reimbursed for the sign cost of $1182; and finally the honour of the Award of Canowindra Community Group of the Year on Australia Day, January 26, 2006.
Next year we will celebrate our 40th anniversary when celebrations will be called for.
The greatest need is for new and younger members to continue the great contribution made to Canowindra by the Society since the Historical Society was formed late in 1967, an outcome of Mae Vanderschaar's Year 9 History Class at Canowindra Central School when Secondary classes were on the Primary School Site before the High School was built.
Their local history project culminated with an Education Week display in the banking chambers of the former CBC on the corner of Suttor and Short Streets, now the home of Rosslyn Finn.
A public meeting was called following the display and the rest is history!
I became the first president, Mae Vanderschaar the first secretary and Mim Loomes the first publicity officer, all teachers at the school.
Glen Weiss, CBC Bank Manager, was the first treasurer.
Still no word from the architect, Peter Freeman, of Canberra, of our Museum plan! We hope to hear soon so that we can apply for grants outlined at Young on March 4 when four members attended a workshop, Access to Grants, organised by the Lachlan Chapter.
The next Chapter meeting is at Forbes on April 1.
