Anzac spirit alive

22 Apr, 2009 08:35 AM
Canowindra residents are expected to come out in force and join as one during the Anzac Day ceremonies on Saturday.

The first service starts at 6am in Memorial Park withe the main service at 11am.

President of the RSL sub branch Brad Starr said people wanting to take part in the dawn service need to be at the Services Club at 5.45am.

“We will be marching at 5.55am, ready for the 6am service.

“People wanting to march at the 11am service need to be at the Junction Hotel at 10:30am.

People with military backgrounds, or who have deceased grandparents who served are welcome to march,” Mr Starr said.

John Fleming a recent guest speaker at the recent River Bank art exhibition “Spirit of Anzac” says believes the Anzac Spirit is alive and well within communities.

Mr Fleming used to live in Gallopoli and was the RSL official tour guide during the early 1990’s.

Mr Fleming who lives between Wollongong and Canowindra is planning to release a book ‘239 Bags on Gallopoli’.

“I used to do tours and try to get people to understand the trauma of World World I.”

Mr Fleming said comparing WWI to today would be the equivalent of losing half a million Australian men.

“The Anzac Spirit is all about sacrifice people make in there communities.

“The rural fire brigade I believe keep the Anzac Spirit alive. They make time and personal sacrifices to better their communities.”

Mr Fleming said he believes people involved in the Rural Fire Brigade should be able to march on Anzac Day.

“I don’t want to be too controversial, but they need to be recognised for the work they do.”
