My grandmother never spoke a lot about the war, no doubt always feeling the loss of loved ones.
However she did relate one story of a son who survived.
Grandma was a religious person and gave her son a pocket sized Bible when he left to go overseas to fight in WW1. When writing to his Mum he often mentioned how he loved that little Bible because it made him feel close to her even though he was thousands of miles away. He also said he found solace in reading an occasional passage whilst amongst the carnage that was trench warfare. That little book was so precious to him that he said he always carried it in his left breast pocket so it was close to his heart.
During an engagement with the enemy he felt a bullet hit him. It knocked him for a six. He lay stunned and shocked thinking the worst when he saw his shirt ripped where the bullet had entered. As he got his breath back he put his hand against his chest where it felt sore then realised he wasn't bleeding, but the bullet had torn his shirt? He removed that little Bible from his pocket and there was the bullet just protruding through the back cover. Amazing but true!
