A book by first time Canowindra author Mim Loomes will be launched at the Age of Fishes Museum in Canowindra this Thursday evening.
The book, titled Long Ago but Not Far Away, is a fictitious children's book about a fish named 'Ossi the Grossi.
It recounts the story of how a large group of fossils was found in mud in Canowindra, after a pond dried up over three hundred million years ago.
While the book is fiction, like many children's books it is also designed to educate children as they read.
"I think learning can be fun," said Ms Loomes
"It's half and half."
The name was taken from the species Canowindra Grossi, which lived in the area around three hundred and fifty million years ago.
Long Ago but Not Far Away originally came out of a grant from the New South Wales Ministry for the Arts.
Ms Loomes taught at Canowindra High School, and lives on a farm outside Canowindra.
She is currently employed providing support across Western new South Wales for people who home school their children, and also volunteers her time at the Age of Fishes museum.
In conjunction with the book, three local artists painted twelve paintings to illustrate the story.
"It was a difficult thing for them to do," said Ms Loomes, because the artists had never even seen what they were trying to paint.
The book will be launched by palaeontologist and author Dr John Long, an expert in studying ancient fish.
"I'm chuffed that he's coming to launch my little book.
"I used to read all his books, because I didn't know all that much about fish and fossils," said Ms Loomes.
The book launch will start at the Age of Fishes at 5pm, and there will be drinks available.
