A new venture in Canowindra has taken a first step towards improving life for the town's men.
Cabonne Council this week approved a proposal to exempt the Men's Shed project from rental, garbage, sewerage and water charges at the Canowindra Scout Hall for three years.
In return, the Men's Shed project team will source funding for and complete approximately $20,000 of improvements to the building.
Project coordinator Ann Stenhouse attended the council meeting in the hope of hearing some good news to pass on to Canowindra residents at a public meeting about the men's shed this week.
"Canowindra has predominantly an ageing population. The community wants to take ownership of this project for the guys who are retired and feel a bit lost. It gives somewhere to meet people and assist each other," she said.
The project, assisted by the Greater Western Area Health Service, will run on grants, donations and community assistance.
Council this week debated the proposal to exempt the project from all the charges requested.
General manager Graeme Fleming said council had to be consistent.
"This group is no different to a lot of other community groups. There should be a consistent policy across the shire," he said.
However, councillor David Hyde said the Men's Shed would create an asset for the community.
"Considering what they're going to do in those three years to the building, they need some kind of compensation," he said.
