Cancer Council thanks Canowindra for its just tea-riffic fundraising effort

19 Apr, 2006 07:57 AM
Residents of Canowindra were thanked last week for their generous support of last year's Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, which enabled the Cancer Council to break the Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Simultaneous Tea Party.

"Around 8 local hosts contributed their energy, humour, time and effort to get their community, friends and colleagues together for a cuppa last year," said Annella Powell from the western regional office of The Cancer Council NSW. "Together they raised a total of $1,787 and also helped us break a Guinness World Record – an amazing achievement!"

On 26 May last year, more than 283,000 guests simultaneously attended morning teas across Australia, smashing the previous record held by a UK charity, with more than 1,000 hosts across western NSW helping to raise over $194,000 towards the cancer fight.

Carolyn Wythes and the team at the Canowindra Health Centre helped get their 2005 morning tea it into the top 50 fundraisers in western NSW.

Mrs Wythes says she is over the moon that Australia's Biggest Morning Tea now holds the world record for the largest simultaneous tea party.

"It is pretty nice to think that we were part of an event that not only helped people with cancer but literally stopped the nation," said Mrs Wythes.

"Last year, as they have for so many years previously, people around Canowindra gave generously to help in the fight against cancer." said Ms Powell. "We want to thank everyone who works for, or fundraises on our behalf throughout the year, it's important we acknowledge how vital their contribution is."

"The entire community should be proud of their contribution to Australia's Biggest Morning Tea last May," said Ms Powell

"By simply sharing a cuppa the cancer journey for local cancer patients has been made a little easier."

"We are really looking forward to this year's event with our preparations well under way," said Mrs Wythes.

"I want to encourage other people to get involved, it doesn't matter how big or small your morning tea is, it all adds up.

"Australia's Biggest Morning Tea is still a couple of weeks away so there is plenty of time to plan.
