Canowindra High's stud ram sires his first crop of lambs

12 Apr, 2006 07:56 AM
Canowindra High School purchased a stud Poll Dorset ram at Traves "Woodlock " Stud auction last year and is reaping the benefits with the first group of lambs born to the new sire.

The current year 12 students selected the stud ram from over 90 rams as part of their studies in animal production based on Objective Measurement figures for production.

The crossbred ewes were joined last year in November. Phil Balcomb graciously donated his time and expertise to scan the ewes, allowing the students to separate the ewes into different mobs depending on the number of singles or multiple births in each ewe. Non pregnant ewes were placed back with the ram for re-joining or culling.

"Canowindra High School has been widely recognized for the quality of its school farm, agricultural programs and consistently high level of HSC achievement by students in Agriculture courses" school principal Dave Evans said.

"Much of this credit is a result of the strong ties to the local community and the generousity of our local producers. The school reflects the quality of local agriculture".
