The most well known shots in the original British movie "The Italian Job" are of Leyland Minis hurtling down the steps of the Gan di Dio Church in front of a wedding party and doing a 20 metre roof to roof jump over the streets of Rome.
Cameron Guihot from Canowindra High School's year 12 Industrial Technology - Auto class hasn't quite reached that stage but at least he has the beginning parts.
Cameron recently bought two Leyland Minis on e-bay, for his HSC major work. He will be cannibalizing a 1976 car with working 1098cc engine and drive train and fitting them to a 1971 shell.
"The '76 car has original rims, dials, seats and steering wheel," Cameron said. "I will have to do a bit of work with the upholstery, but my first job is to cut the rust out."
Cameron's interest in the Mini was sparked by his brother who has a Mark 1 Morris Minor Panel Van.
Bob Scott, Cameron's teacher, says that Cameron has spent a huge amount of time outside of school hours working on the car. "Cameron has had to develop a lot of skills in relation to metal work, like welding, so that he can work on the car," Bob commented. "He has already built a new guard for the right front wheel."
While the 1971 shell is currently orange, Cameron plans to give it a blue body with white roof re-spray. His eventual aim is to get it fully registered.
Cameron would really appreciate anyone who has knowledge of the Leyland Mini or possibly has spare parts to contact him via Mr Scott at the school. "In the HSC every little bit of help is useful," said Cameron.
