Cabonne Council has once again recognised its achievers in the Community with Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Group of the Year Awards this Australia Day.

Mayor Kevin Duffy extended his thanks to the individuals and community groups involved for their contribution to the Cabonne community at the Canowindra Australia day celebrations.

“I’m extremely proud of these great people. Their involvement makes a difference to so many,” he said.

Cabonne’s Australia Day Ambassador and well known actress Penny Cook presented Graham Rice, Emily Kate Clements and The Canowindra Lions Club with the Awards of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Group of the Year awards respectively.

Citizen Of The Year Canowindra: Graham Rice.

Graham actively supports local sporting clubs and schools and is involved in many organisations as Treasurer including Junior Rugby club and Canowindra Show Society.

He is the Chairman of Canowindra Centenary of Federation Committee and contributed largely to its success.

An active member of the Canowindra Historical Society and Museum and was the force behind the success of a week of activities ‘Celebrating Sport in Canowindra’ which was listed in the state program of the National Trust Annual Heritage Festival.

Young Citizen Of The Year Canowindra: Emily Kate Clements

Aged just 17, Emily is a strong individual and inspirational role model who strives for excellence and has been very successful academically at Canowindra High School. She has served the community through the school, work and voluntary activities.

Community Group Of The Year Canowindra: Canowindra Lions Club.

Established 42 years ago, The Canowindra Lions Club is heavily involved within the local community. Of the 27 current members; two founding members still remain in the group.

Australia Post Commemorative Stamp Award: Rhonda Ward

Cabonne Council is delighted to present the 2009 Australia Day, Australia Post Commemorative Stamp Award to Rhonda Ward of Cargo.

Rhonda was nominated for this award to honour and recognise the contribution she and other foster parents make within our community.

Rhonda is an inspiring example of generosity and selflessness with over 20 years involvement as a foster parent. She has been a member of Cargo Parents and Citizen Association for over 20 years being an active committee member and holding the position of President over 5 periods.

Rhonda has been heavily involved in numerous community activities including fundraising, cooking for stalls, Lions Club dinners and supporting classroom activities, school excursions and school events. Rhonda’s significant contribution to families in crisis and her service to the Cargo P&C Association has made her a valued community member.

Mayor Duffy said all these awards are about recognising and rewarding our local heroes – people that are role models in our community and people who inspire us all to reach higher levels with our own community involvement and personal achievement.

Cabonne’s Youth Ambassador: Ellie Middleton

Ellie Middleton of Molong has been named Cabonne’s Youth Ambassador. Ellie’s strength and determination has allowed her to make many Scholastic achievements as well as have a positive attitude towards life and all things she undertakes. Ellie’s self motivated, caring and respectable reputation is held in high regard throughout the community.

Ellie was awarded Council’s Youth of the Month award in April 2008.
