Corrigan holds tight to Games dream - Athlete earns her place in 2006 Commonwealth Games side

08 Feb, 2006 07:52 AM
Despite the problem of an ear infection, Lisa Corrigan has held on to win a spot in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games team.

The 21-year-old athlete, now based in Canberra, hung on to third place in trials on the weekend to earn her place wearing the green and gold.

The news was only announced yesterday at lunch, with her family in Canowindra ecstatic about her chance.

Mum Cathy Corrigan said she was glad some luck had finally come her daughter's way, after a few setbacks with illness and injury.

She said although Lisa placed third in the trial, she was disappointed with the time she ran, particularly after conquering a personal best last month.

However, the disappointment has only slightly dulled the excitement of competing in the Commonwealth Games.

"She's very excited, as am I. We just wanted to let Canowindra and Cowra know, because Lisa still thinks of herself as a Canowindra girl."

"She has worked so hard for this, it's just great."

The week prior to the games' trial, Corrigan had won the first of the Grand Prix series, and the week prior to that, ran a personal best in the NSW championships.

Corrigan will compete at Melbourne in the 1500 metres Women's event.
