This month marks four years since supporters of a Canowindra Skate Park began a community-driven campaign to construct their own facility in the town.
And although construction of the facility is still some months away, progress is continuing, stressed key supporters.
Anne Traves and Ken Willson, two Canowindra parents and Skate park committee members, said paperwork is well underway at Cabonne Council.
“Cabonne tells us they have received Expressions of Interest regarding construction of the Skate Park, and they are currently in the process of looking further into them,” Mrs Traves said.
Staff indicated to her a rough timeframe would be that by the end of the month, Council would up to the next stage of calling for tenders, and once a tender agreed upon, construction could start.
It’s been a long wait, and the community group has worked long and hard to turn their dream into reality, raising $35,000 on their own.
Despite the now four year stretch, the group still has a core support of thirty plus young people – ironically warned at their very first meeting that the project could take a
couple of years to come to fruition.
Mrs Traves said after all these years, “the kids are really looking forward to it being built”.
Another plus for involving Canowindra’s young people in the entire process right from the start has meant they have their ideas about design.
“They are really excited to be involved in it, from taking ideas at other skate parks and adapting them for Canowindra.
“They’ll see something they really like at another skate park, but maybe discard another design they don’t like.”
The Canowindra Skate Park will be constructed at the Sports Trust Oval.
Mrs Traves and Mr Willson stressed their thanks for the support of councillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker.
Cabonne has committed $75,000 to the park’s construction.
