Cultivate new ideas for your farming future

18 Aug, 2010 02:13 PM
Producers keen to tap into new ideas and explore how they may help their own farming practices can be inspired at an upcoming open day.

A grazing project partnership between Mid Lachlan Landcare and Lachlan Catchment Management Authority aims to engage graziers to learn about and implement sustainable grazing practices and support a peer network who have already changed their management.

Local producer Scott Hickman is the project officer and is organising an Open Day at “Talinga”, which has been running holistically for more than 14 years. He hopes people can be inspired by the experiences of others – their ideas and practices – and share their experiments so they can be adapted and applied to other farming situations.

All that’s needed is an open mind and a willingness to share.

“We are really seeking input on what people want from it,” Mr Hickman said.

“We want people to provide us with feedback and have a real look at some of the systems in place on some properties and see how they can apply it and make it relevant to theirs, from beginners to those who have already tried a few things.

“We want to give practical, hands on help, that they can translate to their own property.

By coming to “Talinga”, they can hear and see first hand the good and bad results, explore how a time controlled system may work for them, maintaining 100 per cent ground cover and how to move into the future.

“Conditions may be good now thanks to the rain, but times can turn again.”

The project area includes districts around Cowra, Canowindra, Cranbury, Eugowra, Carcoar, Woodstock, Hovels Creek, Koorawatha and Gooloogong.

All producers are invited, including grain farmers.

The grazing project will increase the number of vibrant healthy farms producing the best food and fibres and support farmers to improve grazing management, improve water use efficiency resulting in increased groundcover and feed availability, reducing erosion and salinity, increasing soil carbon and improving soil health.

The Open day will take place on Friday, September 3, from 1pm through to late afternoon. For more information, contact Scott on 0427 450 416 or by email at oatleigh@dragnet.com.au.
