15 Apr, 2009 09:00 AM
Welcome to the musical world of Darren Hanlon – full of pop alchemy, lyrical smarts and pure songcraft.

After the success of his debut album Hello Stranger and Early Days EP, Darren pushes his talent even further with his latest album ‘Fingertips and Mountaintops’.

Since embarking on a solo career in 2000 Darren has played with many internationally renowned acts including Billy Bragg, Evan Dando, and the Violent Femmes. He has played at major Australian music festivals including Livid, Homebake and Meredith Festivals to capacity crowds. Darren’s live shows are entertaining and endearing and make him a high demand touring act within Australia and now internationally.

Late 2004 Darren played in front of over 10,000 people on the Magnetic Fields USA tour.

His Australian tours have always sold out in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne Perth, Darwin and Adelaide.

Always on the lookout for new music, Hanlon has introduced Australia to international acts encountered in his travels such as David Dondero and Dear Nora from the US and Sweden’s Jens Lekman.

His first full-length album ‘Hello Stranger’ recorded by Chris Townsend (Portishead producer) debuted at No 15. on the ARIA Alternative Album Chart and ‘Punks Not Dead’ from the album made No. 45 on JJJ’s Hottest 100 and featured on their popular compilation (sales in excess in 200,000.)

The debut ‘Early Days’ EP reached No. 17 on the ARIA Alternative Charts and still remained in the AIR Charts for over 52 weeks.

‘Hello Stranger’ has so far sold over 10,000 copies, making it one of the most successful Australian independent albums of all time. Total CD sales of his 2 albums and EP is over 30,000 copies.

'Little Chills' from 2004 was recorded in Tucson's infamous Wavelab studios with Craig Schumacher the man responsible for Neko Case, giant Sand and Calexico.

After it's recording in 2006 his album ‘Fingertips and Mountaintops’ spawned lots of radio songs including ‘Happiness is a Chemical’ (Hottest 100 place getter at 68), ‘Elbows’ and the title track which has an accompanying video staring UK comedian Daniel Kitson.

The album was recorded in an old silent movie theatre in Pomona, Queensland.

As 2009 warms up Darren is about to release a compilation album of rarities and B-sides called 'Pointing ray Guns at Pagans'.

Over the past 6 years Darren has toured the USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, Japan and Europe to great success, and plans on touring these places again in 2009.
