Emergency practice

30 May, 2007 07:47 AM
Canowindra High School hosted a first for the central west on Monday.

A full evacuation drill including the Fire Brigade, SES and Ambulance Service occurred on Monday

morning.

The event was a closely guarded secret and was so effective that a number of passers by had to be reassured that it was only a drill.

A number of rescue situations were thought up by the staff at the school and willing volunteers became victims.

To create maximum reality several staff and students went "missing" which required

searches of the school to find victims.

Each victim had an injury card and circumstance, such as being trapped in a lift.

This presented real life problems for the emergency services and required coordination and cooperation on the ground.

"It was a very important learning experience for everyone," commented Dave Evans, Principal.

"We found out some very important details and are much better prepared in the event of a real emergency."

Bob Scott, event coordinator, thanked the emergency services for their work and praised the cooperation of staff and students.

"The emergency teams worked really well and several important but simple lessons came out of the exercise."

After a debrief over morning tea the victims fully recovered from the heart attack, broken ankle, damaged spine, crush injury and psychological trauma.

All students and staff are reported to be well and alive and ready for work.
