Fears for Internet access motivate councils to lobby

26 Jul, 2006 08:08 AM
Cr John Davis, Chair of Central NSW Councils is travelling the region talking to Mayors and community members about internet access.

"We need to work together in our communities and with both the State and Federal Governments to ensure that we are not stuck with a lower standard of internet access come the anticipated sale of Telstra," he said.

Local Mayor, Cr John Farr also a member of Central NSW Councils, shares Cr Davis' concerns.

"To have broad band access not just for this generation, but for the next, significant upgrading of phone exchanges and phone lines will need to be undertaken.

"We are lobbying for this upgrade to happen so our communities are not left behind should Telstra be sold," he said.

Crs Farr and Davis are particularly worried about the education of young people in regional NSW.

"We don't want our children left behind because they can't access the internet. We don't want to be the poor country cousins left with a lower standard of education and less work opportunities because we have no access to high speed broad band." Cr Davis said.

It's not just a problem for young people, it is also essential for business that the internet be as accessible and as affordable as it is in metropolitan Sydney.

"We have a lot of work to do to ensure that Central NSW gets a fair deal so we can be an attractive destination for business development" said Cr Farr.

Cr Davis anticipates that Central NSW Councils will be examining the phone system here in the Cabonne area in the near future to assess what needs to be done to ensure broadband access in the region.

"Once we have this data we can lobby the Federal Government, Telstra and other carriers for the funding required to keep the region competitive," he said.
