Forensic testing delays trial

05 Oct, 2011 08:54 AM
A TEENAGER charged with the murder of her newborn baby boy in Canowindra in early April did not appear in court in Orange last week as police are still waiting on the results of forensic testing that will form part of the evidence in the case.

The 19-year-old was to appear via audio-visual link from jail, however her solicitor Rebecca McIlveen said her client had decided not to appear and be represented in court instead.

The accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with the murder of her unnamed newborn baby boy between 12.01am and 10am on April 6 this year at the home in Canowindra she shared with her parents.

Police allege the baby was born in secret in the bedroom of the accused and she placed the baby in a bucket where it was later found by family members. Police also allege after the accused delivered her baby boy, she inflicted several stab wounds to the chest of the infant.

The accused was treated at Orange hospital after being discovered by family members, and was charged by Orange detectives on the night of April 8 after she was released from hospital.

Despite a plea from the accused’s parents at a previous court sitting, saying she would be best cared for at home, the court denied bail to the teenager and she remains in custody until her next court appearance.
