From abattoir to club manager

29 Nov, 2006 08:02 AM
The Canowindra Services Club's new Secretary manager is the first to admit the path to his position is not the norm.

Only a few months ago, Grant Cummings was a meat worker at the Cowra Abattoir, and like the rest of the 200 strong work force, was left stranded without a job after the company was placed into administration and then liquidated.

Now, Grant's facing an entire new challenge in the hospitality industry and is loving the major shift in his life and career.

"I'm really enjoying the change," Grant said.

Since starting seven weeks ago, it's been non-stop for the new boss, with the club hosting functions every weekend, completing a major bar reconstruction and re-vamp of the lounge area.

His ideas are already breathing new life into the club, with the lounge area popular with women and families, appreciating a soft, comfy lounge to sit back and relax.

Grant's certainly no stranger to the Canowindra Services Club.

He's been a board member for several years, saying he wanted to have some input into the "place where he drinks".

The club had been without a manager for some time, with the departure of previous boss Craig Allen, so with forced redundancy from the abattoir, "now was as good a time as any to put my hand up," Grant said.

Since being given the nod, he's tackled a massive complete renovation of the Nangar Bar, has hosted several promotions and is looking at other areas of the club for a facelift.

"It's a big club, so things will take time but we have ideas for the future."
