Graffiti turned into art

08 May, 2001 03:52 PM
Canowindra youth applied their artistic skills at a Graffiti Art Workshop that was jointly sponsored by the Canowindra Youth Support Network (Canowindra.dot.com) and JPET (Job Placement, Employment & Training). , Participants were taught how to apply the graffiti art form responsibly and were given a tutorial covering design, safety equipment and safe paint handling. , Held at the end of the school holidays, the day was a success with 15 local youth attending the free BBQ and Art Workshop. , It was great to see the enthusiasm of the kids as they set about designing and painting their art pieces. Their creative sides were let loose in a dazzling display of colour whilst at the same time socialising with peers and building confidence. , Much fun was had by all involved and due to its success further projects are being proposed. The workshop was made possible with the support of local community and Network volunteers and JPET., A special thanks is given to Peter Drury who made his shed and property available for the day; Thom Holliday, local sign writer who led the workshop; Bronwyn, Tracy and JPET who provided the painting and safety materials as well as the food; Lyndon House for the loan of their BBQ; Dave Evans, Chauntel Kennedy and the High School for publicising the event; Jenny Middleton, Carolyn Wythes and Brad Brown for providing materials to paint on and three dedicated volunteers of the Canowindra Youth Support Network who have donated much of their time to this project and Canowindra.dot.com; Mark Thirlwell, Andre Benedict & Adrianna Marchand., Canowindra.dot.com is a central point from where further projects involving youth in Canowindra will occur. , Sponsored by the Canowindra Youth Support Network and supported by Rotary, the Inspire Foundation and local donations the centre provides local youth with free Internet access during after school hours. , The centre was set up in response to the growing concern of issues facing youth, particularly suicide. , Canowindra.dot.com has computer trainers available and Internet access as well as general computer access for the whole community. The centre is open from 9am till 6pm weekdays and 9 till 12 Saturdays and the key is available from Guihot’s Fruit Mart during those times. , JPET will be at the centre every second Friday as part of an outreach program.
