Independent State MP Dawn Fardell said it was vital that councils and communities in the electorate responded to the findings of a government inquiry into regional water and sewerage services.
Speaking after the launch of the report by an independent panel, Mrs Fardell said sensible, sustainable and just solutions to the use and allocation of water had never been more critical.
Submissions to the Department of Water and Energy close at 5pm March 20, 2009.
“This report is released at a time when rural and regional communities are looking at ways of maintaining and growing populations, developing a local skills base, encouraging new industry while, simultaneously, experiencing prolonged drought and tough economic times,” Mrs Fardell said.
“How we approach the issue of water will be crucial to the future of our communities.”
“Importantly there is no suggestion that the government take over water facilities.”
“A number of organisational models have been put forward including aggregating the current 104 local water utilities to 32 regional groups,” Mrs Fardell said.
“Recommendations also cover areas such as regulatory management, pricing regulation, reducing red tape, consumer protection and addressing the skills shortage.
“I am pleased to see that there is recognition that the Government has an important role to play in ensuring that water and sewerage charges are fair and transparent.”
