Canowindra has celebrated what it means to be Australian and honoured those who give to the community without asking anything in return.

During Australia Day celebrations in Morris Park on Saturday, long-time residents Bob and Shirley Robson were named joint Canowindra Citizen of the Year for 2008.

“Bob and I really are very fortunate that we can work together in all of these activities in the community,” Shirley said.

“We really enjoy what we do and find volunteering very worthwhile and rewarding.”

Bob and Shirley have been involved in the Anglican church congregation, Canowindra’s primary and high schools, Canowindra Bowling Club, Billican Productions, Meals on Wheels, Cabonne Community Transport, local driver reviver and the Canowindra and District Historical Society.

Bob has also been a blood donor for over 40 years.

Veronica Wallington was named Canowindra Young Citizen of the Year for her achievements in cross country and track running.

She used the opportunity to thank people, businesses and community groups who assisted her with fundraising for her trip to the World Mountain Running Championships in Switzerland in 2007, where she placed third in the individual event and first in the team event.

“The support was overwhelming and my trip and world title would not have been possible without it or you,” she said.

Veronica also mentioned Canowindra athlete Lisa Corrigan, who she said was a huge inspiration.
