The new year is unfolding which promises to be another busy one.
More than ever we need new members willing to serve as volunteers on the museum roster, help maintain the museum, continue the work of assessing the significance of the museum collection and to participate in and help plan Society activities.
Museum Building Plans: There has been much activity during the summer recess for the building committee discussing plans for extensions to give an attractive face to Gaskill Street and to include visitor facilities, a lucerne display, an archives room and a multipurpose area for meetings and changing displays.
Already some money is in hand from donations and fundraising and the Historical Society was most appreciative of the cheque from Lawrence’s IGA Community chest at the end of 2008.
National Trust Heritage Festival 2009 Again, our Society has listed events for the National Trust Heritage Festival 2009 where the theme is ‘Our Place in Space: Under the Southern Cross’ in this International Year of Astronomy.
The first event will be a power point presentation by John Sarkissian, Chief Scientist, at the Parkes Radio Telescope. Canowindra members of the Central West Astronomy Society, Michael Grimshaw and David Bigg, have organised this for our first ‘History in the Club’ on Friday 3 April from 12.30 pm to 2 pm in the Nangar Room at Canowindra Services Club.
We are honoured to have such a distinguished speaker in Canowindra and we urge all to mark the date. Cost is $12 of which $10 is for the lunch and $2 for Society expenses. Bookings are essential with secretary, Jan Harrison, 63640258 and not with the Club.
Other activities are planned on dates to be arranged: ‘Viewing in the Paddock’ at the home of A and J Farley, Rivers Road, and an organised ’Trip to the Dish’ at Parkes. Forbes has 10 events listed in the National Trust Festival program from 1 to 10 May. Details are displayed at www.forbes.nsw.gov.au
Histor y in the Club was popular last year and seven more are planned for the first Friday from April to October. We have interesting speakers and plan to publish a full program soon.
Society Meetings will follow at 2 pm each month.
‘Back to Canowindra Week’ to celebrate the Railway Centenary 2010.
The coming of the Railway to Canowindra in 1910 was a major factor in the development of the town.
The building boom just before and after 1910 transformed Gaskill Street and brought unprecedented growth in the town’s population.
Our Society plans to call a public meeting soon to form a town committee to organise what could be a week of activities in the last week of September 2010.
It is hoped that anyone interested and representatives from all town organisations will participate.
Last year Lawrance Ryan spoke at a ‘History in the Club’ stressing that Canowindra is very fortunate to have a railway precinct, one of the most intact in NSW, at the end of its main street.
So much is possible but it needs to be a town event.
The AGM (Annual General Meeting) of the Society will be at 2 pm on Friday 6 March 2009 in the RSL Room at the Services Club. New members are welcome to attend.
