The second Wednesday in October is a special day for the volunteers and clients of the Cabonne Home and Community Care Service. This was the day chosen at State level for celebrating Neighbour Aid and Social Support Services and is known as the NSW Neighbour Aid Day.
Forty nine clients, carers and volunteers enjoyed a trip to Abercrombie Caves, a real Aussie BBQ and fun activities to mark the day.
The joint facilitators, Merlene James and Glenda Gavin, both agreed that it was a good idea to offer the trip to volunteers as well as clients and carers. The mix added to the enjoyment of the day and judging comments made by many who attended, the day was a huge success.
Neighbour Aid was first set up in the Cabonne LGA in 1991 and, under Council's management, has developed into a service that gives practical assistance to those people who are frail, have disabilities in the community and need a little help with the tasks of everyday living. Funding comes through the Department of Ageing, Disabilities and Home Care. The Cabonne service offers individualised low level support services and social activities that assist in keeping people in touch with each other, their community and puts a little fun in their lives. Volunteers provide most of the Neighbour Aid services and all services given under Neighbour Aid are by assessment only. This is to ensure the services are provided to the people targeted by the funding body and that the service people receive is the service they need.
The co-ordinator, Merlene James, commented that the HACC staff are always happy to talk about the services they provide so, if readers would like to know more, they only need to phone the office on 6344 1199.
