New Council program designed to give village events a leg-up

31 Jan, 2007 07:45 AM
Cabonne Council has launched an Events Assistance Program to encourage the development of new and existing events in the villages of Cabonne.

Community groups, not-for profit organisations, incorporated associations and registered businesses are invited to apply for funding for events, large and small, across the shire.

The aims of the program are to provide a fair and equitable means for communities to access Council funding, to promote the region and increase visitation and to provide opportunities for project and skill development to communities and individuals involved with events. Applicants are required to fill in an application form addressing funding criteria and are encouraged to develop an event strategy.

The Events Assistance Program is divided into three categories. Flagship Events (up to $5,000 per annum), Core Events (maximum of four grants of $500 to $2,000 per annum) and Developing Events (four grants of $200 to $500 per annum).

"Flagship Events" are defined as those with a significant impact on visitation and an established reputation outside the region, such as the Molong Music and Arts Festival. "Core Events" are events with the potential to grow and increase visitation. "Developing Events" are small events in either conceptual or developmental stages.

Cabonne Council's General Manager, Graeme Fleming, said Council strongly supported the program because events and festivals have positive impacts on both the economy and the moral of communities.

"Events and festivals are not only important to our tourism industry but also to our sense of community identity," said Mr Fleming.

"Festivals give us reason to celebrate and to participate in things beyond our everyday experiences."

There are two funding rounds for the Events Assistance Program, the first closing on Friday 16th March 2007 and the second Friday 14th September 2007. Applicants are welcome to contact Council's Promotion and Tourism Officer Julia Andrews on 6392 3201 to discuss their application or to request an application form.
