New events to join old show favourites at Canowindra

20 Sep, 2006 07:48 AM
One hundred and five years after the first Canowindra Show, the event continues to adapt, change and tackle new challenges.

This year's show has several new additions to its list of drawcards, along with all the traditional show favourites, including the fast and thrilling action of polocrosse and a Sport Shear competition.

The Canowindra P A and H Association hopes that a blend of the old and the new will appeal to a broader cross section of the visitors and community members. Welcome news is the completion of a new shearing shed, which will host the show's inaugural Sport Shear competition.

Interest in the Sports Shear battle has been strong, with up to 60 competitors over four classes indicating their intention to battle for the prize money.

The aim is not necessarily to award the fastest shearer, but the fastest and cleanest, with marks deducted for cuts and nicks.

A spread of classes ensures all will be catered for, including Novice, Intermediate, Senior and Open, with an Open and Novice wool handling competition running simultaneously.

Phil Balcombe, Stephen Russell and Charlie Davis have been working their fingers to the bone to get the shed kitted out for the event; the shed being donated by Dean Neville of Kitome in memory of his father.

Competition in the Sport Shear will commence at 9am on Saturday morning and continue throughout the day, breaking for lunch.

Another first for this year's show is the staging of a Polocrosse match as part of Friday evening's entertainment lineup.

It is largely an exhibition event but the action should be urgent because competitors are in training for nationals in less than two weeks time.

Competitors will travel from across the area for the Canowindra game, and are keen to show their skills and talents to an appreciative crowd.

Polocrosse action starts from 6pm on Friday evening.

Of course, all the traditional crowd favourites will be staged with these exciting new events, including the Tug of War, Friday night fireworks and the Smash Up Derby, along with some of the district's finest displays of livestock and produce.

Saturday is the main day for competition, with plenty to see apart from the normal fun of SideShow Alley.

Judging for dogs, poultry, Stud Cattle, British and Australian Breeds Sheep will take place, with wood chopping heats and finals contested throughout the day in Open, Local and Novice categories.

Although Horse events start on Friday, with local Pony Club events, Saturday will see ring, saddle and horse events, and the crowd favourite, Show Jumping.

Also on Saturday is the Vintage Tractor Pull, accompanied by a large display of vintage cars of vehicles, and providing a grand finale is the grand parade.

The Canowindra Show is on Friday and Saturday, September 22 and 23. Consult the Show Schedule for specific event details and times.
