Balloons will still be in the skies above Canowindra next month, despite the demise of Marti's Canowindra Balloon Fiesta.
A group called the Friends of Canowindra Ballooning, in conjunction with the NSW Ballooning Association, are planning to hold a meeting in Canowindra on the weekend of April 8 and 9.
Jan Kerr, spokesperson and Canowindra-based balloon operator, said the group envisions anything from between 15 to 20 balloons taking to the skies above the town and encourages people to come along and see the balloons take off.
An agreement regarding the meeting was only finalised this week.
In support of the meeting, some local businesses are organising events to run in conjunction with the weekend, including a jazz night at the Royal Hotel, art exhibitions at the Riverbank Gallery and The Old Vic Inn, and a function at Taste Canowindra.
Ms Kerr stressed that the meeting, although open to the public, was not an event, and nor would spectators be charged, thereby negating the insurance problems that plagued Marti's.
"Those interested will have the chance to pay for commercial rides and of course, see the balloons take off.
"The idea is for something in the spirit of the first Marti's."
