Saturday 29th November 2008 saw the Official Opening of the long awaited Canobolas Zone Fire Control and Training Centre at the new location on Forest Road Orange. This multiple million dollar project is the first of RFS “Standard Design” centres to be built in areas throughout NSW.
The Centre features a “state of the art” training centre, accommodation for 14 staff members, a well equipped operations & planning suite of rooms, a helipad and storage facilities. There is a 500,000 litre water storage dam, electrical backup systems and the latest in Radio and Communications systems.
This Centre will act as both a Training Centre and Fire Control Centre for the local Canobolas Region and will also make these facilities available to people from throughout NSW.
The Centre was opened by The Hon. Tony Kelly MLC, Minister for Police, Lands and Emergency Services and Commissioner Shane Fitsimmons FSM who spoke of the enormous amount of cooperation and support given by various government, commercial and community agencies in bringing this project to completion. They also congratulated and applauded the work of the volunteers, their families and employers of the NSW Rural Fire service in the local area.
As well as the handover of new fire trucks and equipment to various brigades some Canowindra and district RFS brigade members were also presented with awards at the ceremony. Max Loomes, a member of the Nyrang Creek brigade received a Life Membership for his work with the brigade in excess of fifty years. Max has been the Secretary/Treasurer for over 25 years and continues to hold the position of Deputy Captain.
Other locals who received Long Service certificates and medals include Stuart and Ray Nash, John Traves, Laurence Parrish and David Cullane. Well done to everyone.
