Remembrance Day ceremonies play vital role in keeping history alive: RSL president

14 Nov, 2007 07:25 AM
Local Remembrance Day ceremonies play a vital role in preserving the memory of service men and women, according to Canowindra RSL sub branch president Brad Starr.

Mr Starr conducted a Remembrance Day ceremony at Canowindra’s Memorial Park on Sunday, which was attended by 150 to 200 people.

“With the Great War and World War II, there were a lot of local men and women that went away to fight and maintaining their memory within the town’s history is vital,” he said.

“The ode says Lest We Forget, and we should make sure that history is passed on to the younger generations.”

A contingent of Lions club members from throughout the local district participated in the service because they were in Canowindra for the Lions District Convention during the weekend.

Canowindra Lions president Ron Cain said the convention was a success.

About 180 people attended the convention dinner on Saturday night and were entertained by students from Canowindra High School.

Cadets from Cowra officially opened the convention on Friday night and activities continued through to Sunday.

District governor Bruce Buckley and another Lions member raised $700 on Saturday night by shaving off their moustaches.

This was added to more than $10,000 raised throughout the district in the past 12 months, which will be donated to the Lions Cord Blood Project.
