Removing hazards to keep elderly safe

19 Sep, 2007 08:14 AM
Preventing falls was the focus of a community expo at Canowindra this month.

About 50 people attended the event which was organised by Canowindra Community Health.

Occupational therapist Sarah Cutler said people who were most at risk of falls included those with health problems such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, dementia, diabetes, poor nutrition and poor eyesight.

To reduce the risk of falling around the home people should make sure they have good lighting, appropriate footwear, no slippery surfaces and remove or secure hazards like rugs, cords and hoses.

“Getting this information is important for people to remain independent and safe around the home and to stay at home for longer,” Miss Cutler said.

Other ways to prevent falls include keeping mobile, eating a healthy variety of foods, standing up slowly and having regular eye checkups.

Miss Cutler said family and friends could help by checking on family members regularly and ensuring hazards were removed.
