Rewarding luxury

24 Oct, 2007 09:01 AM
When they bought some of the rockiest land near Canowindra, people were wondering what was wrong with Kyle Wallace and Liz Edmunds.

Seven years later they have established themselves in the niche market of luxury accommodation and they have the accolades to prove it.

Everview Retreat has recently been named a finalist in the unique accommodation category of the NSW Tourism Awards.

"We're competing against multi-million dollar resorts and it would be a dream come true to win," Liz said.

"We're just so happy to make the finals, there are so many advantages from a marketing perspective when you do achieve in awards of this level."

Everview is located 18km from Canowindra near Windowrie Estate, and comprises two self contained luxury stone cottages, one with one bedroom and one with two.

Kyle and Liz were living in Coffs Harbour when they decided they wanted a tree-change, did some research and headed west.

"People thought we were crazy buying the rockiest block, but we had a long-term plan of harvesting the stone off the land and using it as a building product for the cottages," Kyle said.

Everview attracts about 60 per cent of its guests from Sydney and Canberra and the rest come from regional areas including Dubbo, Parkes, Mudgee, Bathurst, Forbes, Young, Lithgow and Orange.

"People come and stay here and go out into the community and spend money on eating at restaurants, buying wine and getting fuel," Liz said.

"A couple that stayed here recently went down to a local cellar door and bought $800 worth of wine to take home. That's not uncommon."

Kyle and Liz offer services including charter flights to and from Cowra, personal chefs and, if the client has a helicopter, they're free to land it in the back paddock.

They are currently planning a third cottage to be finished by this time next year, which will be a two-storey cypress four-bedroom cottage.

They're also planning an aquatic centre with pool, spa and gym, enclosed barbecue area and a half tennis court.

The NSW Tourism Award winners will be announced in Sydney in November, and if Everview Retreat is successful this won't be its first award - last year it won the New Tourism Development category of the NSW Inland NSW Tourism Award and this year they were finalists in the hosted accommodation and deluxe accommodation categories.
