Rotarians support Bowelscan project

03 Mar, 2010 07:36 AM
The Rotary Club of Canowindra Inc. will again participate in the national Bowelscan Program.

Rotarians will be selling kits on Saturday 6 and March 13, and kits will also be available for purchase from Canowindra Pharmacy.

In 2007, the Federal government started its own Bowelscan program and each year people celebrating their 50th, 55th and 65th birthdays are issued with testing kits, there is no need for these people to complete the Rotary testing.

The cost of each kit is $10.00 and the purpose of the kit is to screen for hidden blood in the bowel motion.

A positive result indicates that further consultation with a doctor is necessary. Last year 12 people from the Rotary District 9700 returned positive results – 1 under 45 years, 1 aged 46 – 55 years, 3 aged 66-75 years and 7 people of unknown age. All people over the age of 40 should undertake a Bowelscan test every year.

Central West Pathology will again perform the testing, they have requested people include their date of birth.

Clients will be notified if a test is positive or negative; if positive a letter will also be sent to their nominated doctor.

Completed kits need to be returned to Canowindra Pharmacy as soon after completion and before April 28, 2010.
