 RSL appeal for help

RSL appeal for help

21 Jun, 2006 08:07 AM
Canowindra RSL Sub branch executive members are desperately appealing for help from the community.

Secretary Noelene Liccioni warned the branch may fold or merge with Cowra if more people do not become involved.

The sub branch executive has remained static for many years now and members are now feeling their age.

Some are considering their health, some relocating to another town to live, but all are worried about the future of the sub branch with no others stepping forward to take on the duties.

"We have a president that is 82, our treasurer is 82, another member 82 and the time has come for us to step back and focus on other areas of our lives, but we can't," Mrs Liccioni said.

"We are desperate for help and especially to involve younger people, to share the workload.

"It would be a real pity if the sub branch did fold, because there is such strong support for the RSL, and days like Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, in this town.

"This sub branch held its first meeting on March 27, 1920, making it 86 years old. It has such a proud tradition. And last year, we even completed a major project on refurbishing Memorial Park."

At this stage, the executive is hoping for at least three to four people to put their hands up to help, and as soon as possible, so there is ample time to 'show them the ropes' of the working and organising of the sub branch.

As Canowindra is hosting the Biannual Conference of the South West District Council of the RSL later this year in August, its also a perfect time for new volunteers to gain a unique insight into the organisation.

"We have at least one lady who has offered to help, but we need more," Mrs Liccioni said.

If you are interested in becoming involved in the sub branch, please contact Noelene Liccioni on 6344 1814.

The next sub branch meeting will be held on Friday, July 14.
