Seventy guests gather to celebrate Historical Society’s anniversary

22 Aug, 2007 09:09 AM
The fortieth Anniversary of the Canowindra Historical Society and Museum Inc. was celebrated on Sunday, July 29 with a delicious luncheon prepared and served by members.

There were seventy members and friends present who were able to renew acquaintances and review photos and memorabilia of the activities of the last forty years.

A program of items reflecting the achievements of the Society was the afternoon's entertainment.

Musical items taken from the Societies' plays were presented, the audience joining in the choruses and these were very well received.

At the conclusion of the entertainment four very young descendants of Canowindra Pioneers presented information from the inscriptions on their families plaques from the Pioneers Wall and also sang an item which will be presented at the Orange Eisteddfod.

Members of the Society have produced the musical plays Collit's Inn and Reedy River and organised tours to such places as Jenolan Caves, Forrest Reefs, Snowy Mountains, Riverina District and Mungo National Park.

A wide selection of articles have been given by the people of the district for display at the Museum.

Several fashion parades have been held over the years, some fro the Societies funds and others in conjunction with some charities Red Cross etc.

Several books have been written by members of the Society and these are a great record of the history of our district.

The Pioneers Register is being produced at the moment. These books are always available for purchase.

It was interesting to remember what had been achieved and especially the group of buildings which we have, including the Murga School rooms with its extensions, the 1828 Slab Hut, the purchasing of the Railway Cottage (formerly the Station master's residence) the Tailor's shop, originally in Gaskill Street now displaying a school room, and the Wool Shed.

The Society thanks the community and the various Service Clubs who have helped us with these projects.

For the Centenary of Federation celebrations a Pioneer's Wall was built honouring the Pioneers of the district and this was completed with attractive entrance gates.

A series of pavers generously donated by the local community complements the entrance.

The Historical Society is planning and hoping to build a multi-purpose building for displaying various collections and travelling exhibitions.

Our museum is supported by the whole community, run by volunteers and is open at times during the weekend or by arrangement.
