Canowindra's push for a skate park received a welcome boost yesterday when Cabonne Council offered in-principle support to the project.
Nearly 500 Canowindra residents signed a petition asking council to support the $120,000 project by helping the Canowindra Skate Park committee apply to the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation for funding.
If council is successful in helping attract $60,000 worth of funding from the NSW Government, it will also contribute $30,000 from its own coffers to the facility.
The remaining $30,000 will be raised by the skate park committee.
Skate park committee member Mark Edwards said the town's youth were in need of such a facility and had contributed greatly to the fundraising efforts.
"There are a number of younger representatives on the committee, which is great to see. They have been actively involved in meetings and fundraising efforts," he
said.
The skate park has attracted the support of over 50 local businesses in Canowindra but the committee said it needed the clout of council to give weight to its request for state funding.
Cr Wendy Pankhust congratulated the committee, saying the project deserved council's backing.
"If this is going to fulfil the needs of our kids then we should support it. We are providing a facility for kids to spend their time constructively," she said.
Council already has $13,000 set aside in its Sport and Recreation Fund.
The remaining $17,000 will be drawn from its capital works reserves if it is successful in obtaining state funding.
