Springfest street closure appeal made too late

Springfest street closure appeal made too late

27 Sep, 2006 07:55 AM
As Canowindra Springfest organisers gear up for the start of another annual festival, Gaskill St businesses have taken their concerns over the closure of the street on Saturday for Springfest to Cabonne councillors.

Canowindra Newsagency owner/operator Graham Rice, along with the support and signatures of several other retailers, had written a letter to Jenny Weaver asking for an objection to be lodged to closing Gaskill St for the Saturday carnival.

"It is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, Saturday of the October long weekend," Mr Rice wrote.

"There are three weddings in town that day.

"Every time the main street is closed, our takings have been reduced significantly.

"The elderly have difficulty getting to the main shopping area and I have been advised by customers that when they see the barricade, they have driven to Cowra to put their Lotto in.

'With the Shep's Corner Store closing, it is imperative that the street remains open until at least 12pm."

Owners of Guihot's Parkview Produce, Belubula Butchery, Lawrence's IGA and others signed the letter.

Cr Jenny Weaver said she had taken the letter to Council and raised the concerns at the last meeting, but that Council felt it was too late to change the decision.

"I can understand both sides, but if the businesses feel so strongly, they need to talk with Springfest organisers well in advance, not a fortnight before.

"Council considered it too late to change the street closure."

Council was presented a petition countering the letter, with over 27 signatures urging Cabonne not to change the closure.

Cr Weaver urged both sides to communicate with each other next year well in advance of the festival.

"There are ways around this but they need to attend meetings months beforehand. What about the idea of a Sunday morning street carnival?"

Last year's Springfest Saturday Street Carnival attracted hundreds of people to Gaskill St, and strong media coverage of the town and the continually evolving Springfest festival.

Springfest was coined to reflect the changing culture of the town and district, celebrating a community growing increasingly popular with artists as a base.

Similar events celebrating art, culture and community have been planned for this year's festival, with many businesses hosting individual events as part of the month long festival.

These include a films festival, vineyard tours, hot air balloon rides, organic farm tours, workshops and competitions.

While it officially opens on Friday evening with the Equinox Art Exhibition at The Old Vic Inn, these events will stretch throughout the month, winding up with the Windowrie Weekend on October 28.
