Student recognised for successful balance of sport and academic

28 Jul, 2010 12:28 PM
A young man who has been heavily involved in community and school activities in Canowindra has been presented with Cabonne Council’s Youth of the Month certificate.

Peter Guthrie, a Year 12 student at Canowindra High School, has demonstrated excellence in all aspects of his life, Cabonne Mayor Kevin Duffy said when presenting the award at today’s Council meeting.

Peter is an active member of the school’s Student Representative Council and plays a leading role in a number of school sports.

Planning to attend university next year, he topped business studies in Year 11 and was recognised for making a significant improvement in his Maths mark in the recent Year 12 half yearly exams.

Peter has successfully balanced his studies with his sporting interests, having played cricket for Western Region Combined High Schools for the past three years and being a member of Western Zone cricket teams throughout his junior years.

He also takes part in a number of other sports and represents Canowindra High School in the Rural Cup.

Keen to give something to his community, Peter is a lifesaving instructor and coaches an Under 12 Years soccer team.

“Peter has displayed excellent leadership qualities through his involvement with his school and his community and I’m certain he’ll do well in any career he chooses in the future,” Cr Duffy said.
