Canowindra IGA store is encouraging local residents to sign-up for the IGA Fast Food Blitz and abstain from fast food for 21 days, breaking the common and unhealthy habit of relying on junk food.
The rules for the IGA Fast Food Blitz are simple – the challenge starts on Friday 1 May and requires participants to abstain from fast-food for 21 days.
Fast-food includes all restaurant/take-away meals; generally food purchased over the counter or via drive-thru as these food choices are often laden with fat, salt and extra kilojoules.
By signing up for the challenge participants will have the chance to win a range of great prizes including a Red Centre BBQ from Home Timber and Hardware and IGA grocery vouchers to help stock their fridge and cupboards with fresh and healthy products.
IGA’s Food 4 Life ambassador, Cindy Sargon, and resident dietitian, Rachel Jeffery, will be available online on the IGA website during the challenge to offer advice, as well as regular hints, tips and healthy meal options to assist those struggling to find cooking inspiration in lieu of the drive-thru.
Cindy Sargon says the IGA Fast Food Blitz tests peoples’ ability to break bad eating habits.
“Many people choose fast food or take-away meals as they believe it is a quick and easy option.
It becomes a habit rather than the actual desire for the food itself,” Cindy said.
IGA’s dietitian Rachel Jeffery strongly recommends people sign-up for the Blitz.
“Many years ago ‘eating out’ or getting takeaway was a special treat that occurred only approximately once a week. Now most of us have a meal outside of the home three to four times each week, while some people eat at fast food outlets everyday.
“The IGA Fast Food Blitz is a good opportunity to establish healthy eating habits. It is a real concern that fast food has become a regular feature in the weekly family meal plan, especially for families with growing children.
There are so many quick, delicious and, above all, nutritious meals you can whip up that taste fantastic.
“Eating healthy, home cooked meals is possible. All it takes is a little planning and setting some time aside on the weekends to organise quick, easy breakfasts, lunches and dinners, which will save you money and keep you and your family healthy,” Rachel explains.
The IGA Fast Food Blitz encourages participants to think about the food they are consuming and serving up to their families, while providing them with resources, including recipes, to encourage a balanced diet.
