Telstra blackout

12 Dec, 2001 07:27 AM
Telstra customers in a radius stretching from Harden in the southwest to Canowindra in the north suffered problems with their phone and fax lines on Monday morning., At one stage, said manager of Canowindra Health Service, Jackie Hutton, the local ambulance station was forced to radio headquarters at Dubbo to notify authorities of the town’s inability to make or receive STD phone calls. , Banks, businesses and residential customers alike were affected, as communications were down for around four hours. , An equipment failure at the Woodstock exchange, occurring at around 7.30am, caused damage to the power supply in the exchange itself, resulting in a major loss of line access for residents in Grenfell, Cowra, Young, Boorowa, Canowindra and Harden. , Telstra’s South Coast and Southern Tablelands Customer Service manager, Neil Watt, explained that affected customers were only able to make neighbourhood and ‘in town’ calls, and not STD., The Woodstock exchange, Mr Watt said, is a part of Telstra’s main fibre , routes linking telephone lines across NSW. , Telstra linesmen were able to repair the damage by 10.30am on Monday, restoring complete service to phone lines.
