The Canowindra community is rallying behind one of their young sons, Grant Cain, to bring him home.
Grant acquired serious brain injuries in a car accident in January 2005, and due to his need for specialist care, has remained in Westmead, Sydney.
Eighteen months later, though, his recovery from his horrific injuries has progressed enough that his family is hoping to bring their son back to his home town.
The only obstacles are two specialist pieces of equipment, vital for the ongoing care of Grant and his physiotherapy exercises, to continue his progress.
Family members have already started fundraising, and have accumulated over $1,000 towards the wish list of a custom mobile shower commode and Metson Exercise Bed.
"The position is now, Grant can be returned to Canowindra, at the local hospital, however special equipment will be needed," explained his uncle, Ron Cain.
"The Canowindra Lions Club has started a recovery project scheme to raise finance for this equipment."
The shower commode will have padded, removable customised arms, customised back rest, a contoured and adjustable head rest and pelvic strap. The cost for this piece of equipment alone is almost $3,600.
Grant also needs a Metson Exercise bed, worth close to $7,000.
To date, $1278 has been raised from a bucket collection and two wood raffles.
Mr Cain stressed that equipment will remain and owned by the Soldiers Memorial Hospital, at Canowindra.
Any donations can be sent to PO Box 42, Canowindra, or contact Ron Cain, Canowindra Lions, in 6344 1497. More fundraising plans are in progress for the future.
Winners of the wood raffle were Alan Gorringe and Robyn Woolley.
