Cabonne Council has once again recognised outstanding achievers within the community on Australia Day.

It has also rewarded several community groups for their ongoing dedication and support to community projects.

Council's Mayor, Councillor John Farr believes Australia Day is a great day, one that he always enjoys.

"Not only is Australia Day a lot of fun, it is also a time to reflect on the last year's events and to recognise people in our community who volunteer their time and dedication.

"Australia Day is a day to recognise and celebrate all their hard work and achievements."

The Australia Day Citizen of the Year awardees for 2006:

Canowindra – Mark Edwards, Canowindra Swimming Club volunteer.

Clergate – Peter Culverson, member of the Rural Fire Service since his teenage years.

Cudal – Jack Carman, President of the Cudal Bowling Club.

Cumnock – Helen Brown, Cumnock and District Progress Association

Eugowra – Tom Gransden, monitor of the 'flood gauge' all his adult life.

Manildra – Reginald Hughes, Secretary of the Manildra Bowling Club

Molong – Jean Staines, Member of the Molong RSL Women's Auxiliary for over 50 years.

Yeoval – Laurelle Neville, supporter of the Yeoval Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Young Citizen of the Year Awardees for 2006:

Canowindra – Ashley Bayliss

Clergate - Tracey Bouffler

Manildra – Nathan Woodhouse

Eugowra - Jessica Yell, 2006 Youth Ambassador

Community Groups of the Year Awardees for 2006:

Canowindra Historical Society

Eugowra SES

Manildra Lions Club

Yeoval Community Hospital Co-operative Auxiliary.

MARK'S HONOUR ROLL:

There are very few sectors of the community that have not benefited from the volunteer work of Mark Edwards, with a particular focus on helping the youth of the town.

His nomination listed the many fields, services and community organisations the Industrial Arts teacher at Canowindra High School has been involved in over the years.

These include:

* ex-president of Canowindra Swimming Club, and actively involved in volunteer work with the upkeep of the pool and running swimming club on Friday nights.

* past organiser of senior football and now currently, Junior Touch Football competition on Monday nights.

* Active member of Canowindra Apex Club, and a previous club treasurer

* Duke of Edinburgh Scheme organisers at Canowindra High School for teenage students

* Instructor and examiner of First Aid Courses (Workcover approved), being a current holder of the Royal Life Saving Society's First Aid Certificate

* Life Saving courses is another area of expertise - as well as instructing swimmers in all awards, he is also a Senior Examiner qualified to examine awards including he Distinction Award and Oxygen Resuscitation

* past member of the Canowindra Fire Brigade and Canowindra SES

* Was the main designer and builder of the metal fish sculptures at the Age of Fishes Museum, and the maker of the sculptures at Swinging Bridge

* also heavily involved in the Swimming Club's organisation of the 50th anniversary competition in February 2004
