Not once, but twice now, Canowindra producer Michael Payten has woken up to emptier paddocks than what he left them.
A whole lot emptier.
Brazen thieves stole a $5,000 steel field bin so wide that when it is transported by road, it needs an escort.
The fully enclosed steel bin was last seen in one of their property’s paddocks, “Alfalfa”, on the Canowindra/Gooloogong Rd on Friday afternoon.
By Sunday, it was stolen.
What’s even more incredulous is a second field bin was stolen overnight on Monday, worth a similar amount.
The original bin is four metres wide and six metres tall and because of its altered roofline, easily identifiable, according to stunned owner Mr Payten.
“There’s only one other like it around the district,” Mr Payten said.
Rural theft, he said, has been plaguing the area for some time now, but up until now, the Payten’s property had escaped relatively unscathed.
Plus, he admits, the sheer size of a field bin, he thought, would deter the average thief.
The Paytens are right in the middle of harvest and the loss of the bins has already given them a few headaches.
Field bins are a vital piece of equipment used to store grain until trucks can transport it from the
paddock.
Mr Payten had the main bin altered by Lachlan Steel, increasing its size and wants it back so much, he’s prepared to pay for it, offering a cash reward for any information leading to the return of the bin.
Police are also investigating the theft.
