Volunteers assist with museum research project

19 Dec, 2007 07:45 AM
Volunteers from the Canowindra Historical Museum are participating in a new project initiated by Cabonne Council to analyse the needs of regional museums and work towards achieving sustainable collections.

The project has been funded by Cabonne Council, Orange City Council and Arts NSW and will include museums and collections in the Cabonne and Orange areas with Blayney joining the project later in the year.

Anne Vincent from Canowindra has been appointed to work with volunteers from all participating museums to identify areas for development.

She will research and profile the current status of museums and collections to identify key collection themes, document and catalogue objects and research the significance of objects and collections.

Few museums have the human and financial resources to actively manage and maintain their collections.

By harnessing new resources and improving planning and coordination, museums can play a more dynamic role in the economic development of a region.

The NSW Government is placing a greater emphasis on councils collaborating to improve museum planning and cooperation and the success of this model project would provide a national example for other councils.
