Winter wet, cold making dramatic impact

18 Jul, 2007 07:54 AM
A month of winter wet and cold is starting to make welcome inroads into district water storages, with even more snow and cold conditions predicted today and tomorrow.

Graziers are advised of impending very cold southwest winds and wet weather, starting from last night, for both the Central West Slopes and Plains and Central Tablelands districts.

The warning extends to tonight.

Earlier falls of snow and winter rain this month have already made a dramatic difference to Lake Rowlands, its water storage and the Central Tablelands Water Supply, with the dam level rising to 98 per cent, thanks to significant inflows.

As a result, CTW water restrictions - little more than a month ago so tight outside watering was almost impossible - have been lifted, with CTW now able to offer a reduction from Level 5 to Level 1 restrictions.

In the same time period, water levels at Wyangala Dam further south are also making a only slightly less impressive recovery - from less than four per cent to just under 16, or 190, 990 ML.

With snow forecast to fall as low as 600 metres above sea level today the SES is also urging communities in elevated areas of the Central Tablelands and Central West Slopes to take care on the roads.
