Youth mentors impress department bigwig

31 Oct, 2007 01:57 PM
NSW Education Department deputy director general Trevor Fletcher had the chance to meet with youth mentors during a visit to Canowindra High School last week.

Mr Fletcher was accompanied by Lachlan area school education director Denis Armstrong when he met with students and mentors participating in the Plan-it Youth program.

Canowindra High School has welcomed volunteer community mentors into the school for more than two years and school principal Dave Evans was pleased to show off the excellent community support these volunteers have contributed to the school.

Mr Fletcher heard Plan-it Youth students speak about the benefits of being able to talk with someone who wasn't a teacher or parent and was impressed by the quality of the mentors who work with students.

These Plan-it Youth mentors have supported young people in years 9 and 10 to consider the value of their time left at school and have assisted them to plan their future training and employment options.

The morning concluded with a quick visit to the staff common room and a tour of the schools impressive agriculture setup.

Hospitality students prepared and served morning tea for the event.

For more information about the opportunities available at Canowindra High School or for details about Plan-it Youth mentoring please contact the school on 6344 1305.
