Calling all cricket hopefuls: chance to join legion of successful Canowindra players

26 Sep, 2007 08:12 AM
From 10am until midday this Saturday morning at Tom Clyburn Oval registrations of names will take place for the coming junior cricket season. Those interested in playing from Milo under 8s to the under 16s are requested to attend and register. Costs set by the Cowra association are for one child $70, two children $105, three or more $135. These costs include raffle tickets. Milo fees are set by NSW cricket and are $42 with many little surprises given away during the mornings. Matt Devlin and Craig Rue will be there to answer questions about sign-ups and fees, training afternoons, coaching, volunteer work and anything to do with Saturday season.

You do not have to know anything about cricket to come along. If you cannot make it in the morning a meeting is to take place an hour later at 1pm at the Canowindra Services Club to setup for the coming season. We need mums and dads to get involved in all age groups to continue the sport in town. Especially the Milo. See Matt or Craig for details.

We spoke last week of many of the Canowindra juniors who were in the Hall of Fame. The list also includes dashing opener Nick Whatman and the Hodge brothers - Jacob and Haydon. Haydon hit two fine 50s last season in the under 16s. At present our club can be proud of currently having 14-year-old Peter Guthrie chosen to under take training with the under 17 Western Zone lads in Dubbo and Orange the past month. We look forward to see how many of our Canowindra players make it into the Cowra representative sides and beyond to Lachlan and possible Zone.

We have been able to supply our own gear the past few years and much thanks for this goes to Ray and Julie Clements for their unending support to the juniors in our town. All our players play in “Clemo’s” shirts. The Services Club have also been great supporters and all our functions and “engine room” discussions take place there.

We also have Vicki Grant of Canowindra Pharmacy who has been associated with cricket since around the under 10s playing days of big John D Grant who now towers over mum. The Dawes brothers have had a hand in painting nearly everything standing in this town and have been with us the past three-four years. Ian Brown, owner of Canowindra Produce, has been a sponsor as far back as Kevin Walker’s been silly. You know, around the time Cook got beached. Canowindra Produce has sponsored more than one premiership. James Patterson the Rural Value from Cowra has sponsored our under 10s for about 10 years. A great effort. James coached in Canowindra when his son was playing. Debbie and Graham Rice of Canowindra Newsagency joined us last season in being a sponsor and we thank them for that. Many people have asked Debbie because she is looking so fit whether she has gone into training and is planning to play cricket this year. Deb says she is undecided.

We cannot finish without just one more Moorbel Magician story. Canowindra High versus Wyalong at Wyalong four years ago. First ball by Canowindra in the field with the Moorbel Magician down backward of square leg on the boundary. Guthrie’s first ball he strays down leg, the batsman turns it very fine and Britty’s off to retrieve. He runs 50 metres at full power only to see the ball fly to the boundary for four. First ball mind you! Britty retrieves the ball, throws it in and in running past spectators getting back into position yells out “get us a drink will ya! I’ve had it!” You too can make the Hall of Fame – just register this Saturday morning.
