Cricket to rule again on Saturday mornings

19 Sep, 2007 08:19 AM
Just about the only thing in the way of the cricket season beginning is the school holidays and once they are over cricket rules on Saturday mornings. Milo for the five-eight age group can start at any date agreed upon because it will be run by Canowindra mums and dads but for all other age groups - under 10s, under 12s, under 14s and under 16s, Saturday, October 20 is the opening of 2007-08 season.

Canowindra muster day is on Saturday, September 29, 10am till midday at Tom Clyburn Oval near the canteen followed by the first meeting of the season at 1pm at the Services Club.

It is well worth coming to the meeting to have your say, ask questions and importantly find out what the latest local cricket news is. All mums and dads, any helpers are also invited and will be most welcome. Dads and mums cannot stay running the club every year especially as their children have a habit of getting older. They have to move on to the senior age groups. Ten years ago Nick Guthrie was just starting his career with boys like all-rounder Mat Rue, all funny Joe Read, Michael “Moorbel Magician” Britt, John “Run Faster” Grant, steelman Joe Payten, smilin’ Joe Lamond, Blocker Woolley, Funky Dunkley, Todd Wyburn and Duncan Myers.

These boys went on to be household names. Guthrie, who coached our under 16s last season like so many other Canowindra boys from a decade ago, now plays first grade. Shawn Craven is one playing first grade, years ago Matt Codner put his hand up when we ran out of openers, Tom Lamond and Alex Grant put their hand up when girls were mentioned at training, Alex Myers did the same too, Kane Trayhurn with his explosive hitting, not to mention his genius bowling, Cho Agustin, Michael Traves, wicketkeeper supremo Sam Beath, under-rated Stewy Scott, Rohan Blair, ‘Muzza’ Bennett and brother Cameron, Capen Jones, stylish batter Peter Guthrie, big bad Josh Duncan, even worse Pig Guihot and overseas imports like Adam Parker and Brydon Hughes.

Who will ever forget big Nick Daly going out to top score in a grand final with a screw going in his thumb and coming out the other side? Tough boys Canowindra cricketers. Who will forget the “Moorbel” Magician taking two wickets in one over and while waiting for the next batter turns to the umpire and said “how’d I do that?” What about the day Ruey got a first ball duck and, wait for it, the ingoing batsman asked him as they crossed, “how’s the wicket playing Ruey?”. Ruey told him and you could hear what he said if you were ordering a large mac meal. The list goes on (thank goodness).

Now we have boys coming through such as Matt McLean, Zac Rue, Conor Lamond, Jacob Devlin, Cassidy, Middleton, McNamara, Cain and others I have not mentioned who will make their mark during summer.

For these boys winning is not everything but a premiership this season would be a nice way to continue our history. At present we hold no age division titles, so good luck to all of you and enjoy the mornings. Thanks to our sponsors who we will mention next week again.

Trials for the rep sides continue this Saturday morning 10am at River Park nets Cowra. Telephone Mick Schaefer on 6341 4624 for enquiries.

As we said last week there is a need for helpers. All the current parents started off somehow on Saturday mornings. Coaching and helping enquiries can be made with Craig Rue on 6344 2050. Craig needs something to take his mind off Parra coming to get the Eagles. Or you can call the more sensible Matt Devlin on 6342 8436.
