A David Henderson-led Morongla ended Canowindra’s renaissance with an embarrassingly one-sided six-wicket win at Holman Oval on Saturday.
Despite missing regular captain Andrew Schaefer, Morongla needed only 10.1 overs to charge past Canowindra’s sub-par 63, retaining the John Guthrie Cup in the process.
A week after ending the long unbeaten run of two-time defending champions Valleys, Canowindra would have been high on confidence heading into the clash.
But they couldn’t figure out the David Howarth (5-17) and David Henderson (1-5) puzzle, battling for runs before being bundled out in the 33rd over.
Howarth continues to top the wicket-taking charts scattering the middle and lower order, while a frugal Henderson conceded just five runs from nine overs including an astounding seven maidens.
Adam Meiklejohn chimed in with a couple of scalps, including the prized wicket of Peter Guthrie (29).
Brett Traves was the only other batsman to manage double figures with 19.
Predictably, Morongla came out swinging in their innings in an effort to chase down the runs as quickly as possible.
It didn’t take them long either Troy Hayes (24no) bludgeoning a six off Matt O’Malveney to finish the match in quick time.
Andrew White chipped in with 21 as Nick Guthrie, Nick Delaney, Brendan Traves and O’Malveney all took a wicket apiece.
There will be some food for thought for skipper Matt Devlin as his side enjoys the bye while Morongla will brace themselves for a top-of-the-table clash against Cavaliers.
If they were to secure a win in that contest they would be outright competition leaders.
