Firsts Bring Winning Run To An End For Valleys

11 Nov, 2009 09:23 AM
After travelling to the Cowra competitions number 1 ground and having an opposition that hasn't been beaten since 2007, it was going to be a tough match to win against the Valleys line up.

All started off well with captain Matt Devlin having his first win of the toss for the season and electing to bat.

After a great start and some lovely shots from our opening batsmen the run rate was exceeding five an over until a mixup saw Pete Guthrie run out for 20.

Brendan Traves and Morrow combined for a handy partnership of 47 before Traves was dismissed for 12.

Then a minor collapse occurred with the next five wickets falling for only 30 including the wicket of Morrow for a well made 57.

Matt O’Malveney and Nick Guthrie took the score to 141 when Guthrie was dismissed for a quick 19 and O’Malveney a short time later for 15.

Alex Myers and Matt Devlin took the score to 170 before Devlin was out for 10 and Myers remained unbeaten on 10.

Nick Guthrie returned for the first time with the ball this season and was immediately on the spot claiming the valuable wicket of Scott Gray in his sixth over and finishing with 1 for 33 off his 9 overs and his fellow opening bowler Brendan Traves bowled his first five overs without success but after a spell returned with some great bowling finishing with 3 for 36 off 10 overs.

Second change Matt O’Malveney bowled out his 11 overs finishing with 4 for 34.

Some great efforts and keenness in the field by some of our younger talent, Wilson, Myers and Traves, and also so great wicketkeeping from Jake Devlin saw us restrict Valleys to 159, with Morrow being named man of the match.

In the B Grade game we went down to Lachlan Hotel.

This weekend will see A grade playing at Holman Oval in Cowra against Morongla at 1pm and B Grade to take on Bowling club at home at 1:30pm
