Mixed weekend for Western Zone

23 Jan, 2008 01:55 PM
Lachlan hosted the Western Zone Colts (under 21s) carnival over the weekend, but the weather literally rained on their parade as they returned a loss and a draw from their two matches.

The Lachlan side – containing Canowindra products Nick and Peter Guthrie – drew their clash with Macquarie on Friday after the match was washed out at lunchtime. They were also on the end of a 72-run hiding to Mitchell on Sunday after the game was transferred to the synthetic Harrison Park wicket.

Mitchell were declared the winners after they scraped to a two-wicket win over Macquarie on Saturday.

In Sunday’s match, Parkes’ Anthony Heraghty played a lone hand in his side’s pursuit of Mitchell’s 9-256.

Fourth-wicket pair Brendan Roweth (43) and Josh Toole (76) added 128 to pilot Mitchell to a competitive total from their 60 overs.

Heraghty blazed a quick-fire 86, including 10 fours and three sixes, but when he was run out Lachlan’s chances all but faded with the score at 5-124.

Fifteen-year-old Peter Guthrie only contributed one, after making an under-pressure 20 on Friday.

His brother Nick chimed in with three wickets from his six overs, but was expensive conceding 49 runs in the process. He also made an unbeaten six with the bat.

In Friday’s match, Macquarie had Lachlan scrambling at 8-102 from 37 overs when Parkes’ weather turned ugly.

Off-spinner Dan Rootes tore through the Lachlan order with 4-18 from eight overs, exposing the inexperienced batting line-up.

The Western Zone side will play in the NSW Country Colts carnival from February 1-3.

Heraghty will captain the Western Zone side at the Newcastle carnival. He will be joined in the Warren Saunders-coached team by Parkes and Lachlan team-mate Israel Symington.

Four Mitchell players and six Macquarie products are in the 12-man squad.

Western Zone – Anthony Heraghty (c – Parkes), Israel Symington (Parkes), Mark Hundy (Mudgee), Josh Toole (Bathurst), Brendan Roweth (Orange), Matt White (Orange), Ian Slapp (Dubbo), Tim Armstrong (Dubbo), James Walsh (Narromine), Jordan Moran (Dubbo), Daniel Rootes (Dubbo), Chris Tremain (Wellington).
