Padding up for junior cricket

12 Sep, 2007 08:26 AM
The junior cricket season starts next month in October after the school holidays for boys and girls who would like to play cricket for Canowindra.

We will be holding a one off “muster day” for sign ups at Tom Clyburn Oval near the canteen on Saturday, September 29, between 10am and midday.

But before our registration day, any player wishing to try out for Cowra representative honours in Primary, under 14s and under 16s must trial at River Park nets Cowra this Saturday, September 15, between 10am and midday, and next Saturday, September 22.

For Canowindra, ages start for the littlies, around five to six years of age, in the Milo Have A Go Saturday mornings here in Canowindra. There are loads of giveaways for registering together with learning hand/ eye co-ordination in basic bowling, catching and how to hit a ball. Parents all get in together and run everything themselves.

You don’t have to know anything about cricket, it is not competitive, and you do not have to drive to Cowra like we had to in past years.

If this fun program continues to be supported by families and run by families, it will remain here in town every summer. It is the nursery of children’s cricket in our town. Milo costs $42 for the eight to 10 weeks participation - these fees are set by Cricket NSW and there are great goodies.

The under 10s play all their games on the one ground in Cowra every Saturday at River Park opposite Jamieson’s Joinery. The under 12s, 14s and 16s age groups generally play home and away however the Cowra association likes the 16s on turf in Cowra every Saturday. As the season approaches, we have some very talented cricketers right through the different ages and it will not surprise if a title comes our way.

Registration forms will be available at schools soon.

There is a need for coaches, managers and assistants for every side.

All parents are made welcome. Enquiries and coaching applications can be made to Matt Devlin on 6342 8436 or Craig Rue on 6344 2050. Applications for coaching must be in by September 27 to be discussed at our first meeting on September 29 after muster morning. So don’t miss the chance to change the face of Canowindra cricket. The meeting starts at 1pm at the Canowindra Services club.

The fees this season set by the Cowra Association are one child - $70 plus raffle tickets, two children, $105, three or more $135. There is also a level one coaching course to be held in Cowra on October 6-7. Soon it will be necessary to have level one to coach. Telephone Mick Schaeffer, the secretary of Cowra juniors, on 6341 4624 for any enquiries.

Don’t miss your chance to play cricket for our proud club. The Hall of Fame has produced too many great players and characters to mention. They will never be forgotten. Many Cowra cricketers have laid awake on Friday nights tossing and turning not being able to sleep knowing they face the wrath and the pace of Canowindra cricket Saturday morning.

Come and play cricket the Canowindra way. The committee and players would like to thank our terrific sponsors such as Ray Clements from Ray Clements Constructions, Ian Brown of Canowindra Produce, Vicki Grant of Canowindra Pharmacy, The Dawes brothers painters, Debbie and Graham Rice from Canowindra Newsagency, James Patterson of Cowra of rural and property valuers and of course the “oasis” at the end of the days play, the Canowindra Services Club. We also look forward to working with the big boys in the senior grades and wish them good luck for success this season.
