School side breaks their duck for the season

21 Feb, 2007 07:43 AM
The following article should be read to the strains of the Hallelujah chorus as Canowindra Public School won their first school cricket match in fifteen years.

Canowindra Public School won the toss and elected to bat against Cowra Public School at Raudonikis Oval at Cowra.

Captain Rohan Toole and Simon Whatman went out to bat and started well.

Early on they scored the occasional four but they kept the score ticking over as they pushed one's and two's all over the field.

It wasn't until the twelfth over that Cowra Pubic broke through as Simon skied a J. Griffiths' ball to A Craig who took an easy catch.

The opening partnership was 58 with Simon scoring 16.

Rohan took full advantage of the 40 run limit in one innings as he retired on 43 after hitting his last scoring shot for four.

This brought Regan Hughes to the wicket to join his brother Curtis and these two batsmen saw the innings to its close.

Curtis finished on 21 while Regan finished unbeaten on 3, with the total at 1- 113.

When Cowra Public went out to bat the demon emerged from the Canowindra Public bowlers.

Bailey Cain and Rohan Toole opened the bowling with venom as both Bailey and Rohan took a wicket in their second over.

Rohan clean bowled L. Tarrant [0], while Harry Whatman pulled off a super catch to remove J. Griffiths[2], the other opener.

The next Cowra pair, of J Wright and A. Craig, settled down and scored freely with one, twos and the odd four moving the score along.

A. Craig [15] was the first to go bowled by a beautiful ball from Curtis Hughes.

K. Murray joined J. Wright at the wicket and moved the score from 28 to 49 before J. Wright[16] was bowled by a swinging ball from Regan Hughes, which made the score 4-49.

Kurt Tidswell was the next bowling success as he clean bowled K. Murray for 3.

On the second last ball of Kurt's over D. Carter skied the ball to Curtis Hughes who took a good catch and made the score 6-59.

Tim Wythes approached the bowling crease next with a swollen hand due to a bee bite, however this didn't slow Tim down at all.

The first ball saw J. Dunk on his way for bowled by a quick ball for 6 runs and in an achievement similar to Kurt's, Tim saw Regan Hughes catch a high ball to dismiss N. Wiegold for 1.

The Hughes boy's combined for the last wicket as Curtis caught J. Eastwood off Regan's bowling for an all out score of 72.

The Canowindra Public boys were ecstatic with their win as they had played well as a team, their fielding excellent which prevented Cowra Public from gaining extra runs through misfields.

Special mention goes to Alex Willson who was wicketkeeper for the first time and was as sure behind the stumps as a young Brad Haddin.

Canowindra Public now goes onto play the winner of the Grenfell- Quandialla match in Canowindra in the next couple of weeks.

A special big thank you goes to coach Matt Devlin, who has patiently moulded this combination of weekend players and first-timers into a winning one, and we wish them all the best in their next match.

Finally in the immortal words of Leonard Cohen, 'Halleujah! Halleujah!
